Cork is the second largest city in Ireland and the third most populated city in Ireland after Dublin and Belfast. Its name comes from the Irish word “corcach” which means marshy place and which refers to the location of the city along the River Lee. An island in the middle of the river represents the main part of Cork city center. It is located just before the Lee flows into Lough Mahon and then into Cork Harbor, the second largest natural seaport in the world after Sydney Bay. The city of Cork is one of Ireland’s major harbors; its quays and docks are located along the Lee.
Along with the renowned International Jazz Festival in October, this city in southern Ireland comes alive all year round with musical, theater and dance performances at the Opera House for example. In addition to the historical pedestrianized center, it is very pleasant to stroll in the university district or on the heights of the city, but also in the surroundings of Cork, which are very diverse.
Good to know
Cork is usually a foggy city, with an average of 100 foggy days per year, mostly in the morning and during periods of high air pressure in winter. Beside that, Cork is also one of the sunniest Irish cities with 3.8 hours of sun on average per day and only 69 days a year when the sun does not show, mainly in winter.
